مَدَّة

A sweeping curve written above the consonant alif in Arabic at the beginning of a word to indicate a glottal stop (a hamza) followed by a long vowel A. This would otherwise have to be written with two consecutive alifs.

In Unicode: it is آ. Here is an example.
