A quilt made in the years just before and just after
2000 or in
honor of the turn of the century from 1900 to 2000. A renewed interest in swapping
charms surrounded the millennium. Quilters from all over the
world swapped small bits of
fabric, usually 2 inches square.
Quiltmakers attempted to make
quilts with 2000 different fabric prints or solids.
Often, quilters asked that swappers sign the squares with their names and locations, resulting in a friendship quilt.
The result of the work is called a millennium quilt, and is usually embroidered or dated with a permanent marker so future generations can know when and why the quilt was made.
