A technology pioneered, or at least in large part spearheaded by Apple Computer in the late 1980s. It was created to work with originally with large-scale NEXT install bases. It is a unix administration tool that lets unix clients propegate system settings and user preferences for each user off of a master NetInfo Server. This is a similar concept to the Windows NT domain setup, except that is it quite difficult to configure.

Apple is heavily pushing this technology to its OS X (non-server) customers as a method of trimmed down unix administration, en masse. In the OS X public beta, the front end for this technology is greatly broken. The command-line tools, however work correctly.
