In the Thai language, peppercorns. The general word for pepper or chili in Thai is prik, used to refer also to chili peppers, which are not native to Southeast Asia. Peppercorns were the original hot ingredient in Thailand (then Siam). Chilis were introduced by the Portuguese in the 17th century, and rapidly became an essential ingredient in Thai cooking.
