A business or government agency, often granted a monopoly to provide certain essential services in exchange for providing them to everyone at uniform rates. Examples of a public utility include gas, electric, water, telephone, cable television and in some cases refuse collection. Compare with common carrier for telephone company. Some public utilities are cooperatives, meaning that the utility is considered to be owned cooperatively by all of its customers.
