The phrase "rat trick" originated when Scott Mellanby of the
National Hockey League's
Florida Panthers killed a
rat in the
locker room before a game, later scoring two
goals. The Panthers' fans ended up throwing toy
rats on the ice at later games, much like the
octopus-throwing tradition of the
Detroit Red Wings.
