Stishovite, named after Sergeï Mikhaïlovich Stishov, a russian mineralogist, is a high pressure, but not necessarily high temperature polymorph of quartz. It was first synthesized in 1961 and is not found in nature, except at meteorite craters where it is often used as diagnostic evidence of an impact. Stishovite is isostructural with rutile.
