Wiktionary is a
free dictionary and
thesaurus collaboratively being constructed at
http://www.wiktionary.org
using the
Wiki metaphor. It aims to describe (in English) the words of all
languages, complete with meaning,
etymology and pronunciation. Its contents are covered by the
copyleft GNU Free Documentation License.
The Wiktionary project was created by Daniel Alston on December 12, 2002. It is a sister project of Wikipedia, a free Wiki encyclopedia. Several wikitionaries in languages other than English have since been started. All of them use the MediaWiki software also used by Wikipedia: a PHP script acting on an underlying MySQL database. Like Wikipedia, they are administered by the Wikimedia Foundation.
