Government that ruled the Ottoman Empire, present-day Turkey, in the early 20th century. Leaders Talaat Pasha, Enver Paasha and Jamal Pasha proclaimed the Empire in 1908. Responsible for the Armenian Genocide, in which 1.5 million Armenians were slaughtered. The Young Turk government considered the Christian Armenians pro-Russian and therefore a threat to the state (this was during World War I; the Ottomans were at war with the Russians). The Young Turks and The Ottoman Empire collapsed in 1923 when Ataturk founded the republic of Turkey.
