Ranjit Singh
1780-
1839. Founder and ruler of the
Sikh state in the
Punjab.
Singh, at the age of 20, was appointed
Viceroy of Lahore by the Afghan ruler. He built an
army from the
Khalsa, Sikh "
holy warriors", who he had trained by
French strategists and
generals. He later took the title of
Maharajah of Punjab.
