Saint Onuphrius
Feast Day: June 12
Inspired by
John the Baptist, Onuphrius lived alone in the desert near the
Egyptian town of
Thebais for 60 or 70 years, surviving off the fruit of
date and
palm trees. After his death around the year
400, he was buried by Saint
Paphnutius, who had stopped by to learn about the exciting prospects of life as a
hermit.
Onuphirus, who wore no clothes except for a
loincloth fashioned out of leaves, is the patron saint of
weavers. Somebody during the
middle ages had a really wicked sense of humor.
