U.S. city located where the
Maumee River flows into
Lake Erie. At one time Toledo was a major manufacturing center known as the
glass capital of the world. Today the city's
reputation has flagged, though it remains a diverse and vital place. Toledo has a marvelous
library. Its impressive art
museum houses a notable collection of
glassware. The first
hippoquarium, a water-filled glass enclosure for viewing submerged hippopotami, can be found at the Toledo Zoo.
Toledoans cheer on the University of Toledo Rockets and the Toledo Mud Hens, a minor league baseball team made famous (along with the local eatery Tony Packo's) by the character Klinger on the TV show M*A*S*H.
Also a place to which I commuted for 10 years, one hour each way… I have an odd, intimate familiarity with this place, which has never been my home.
