Giovanni Pontiero was best known for his role as
Jose Saramago's Portuguese- English
translator. He was faced with the unenviable task of rendering Saramago's unique style into comprehensible
English, a task he accomplished admirably. Sadly, he died before completing his revision of the powerful
Blindness, but here is as full a list of his translated works as far as I can discern:
The Hour of the Star ,
Family Ties ,
Selected Cronicas ,
Foreign Legion:Stories and Chronicles,
The Besieged City
by Clarice Lispector
The Devil's Trill by Daniel Moyano
My Friend the Painter by Lygia Bojunga Nunes
The Red House by Lya Fett Left
Eleonora Dues, in Life and Art,
The Translator's Dialogue ,
Anthology of Brazilian Modernist Poetry
all by the man himself; Giovanni Pontiero
Blindness ,
The year of the death of Ricardo Reis ,
The Gospel according to Jesus Christ,
The History of the Siege of Lisbon ,
The Stone Raft ,
Baltasar and Blimunda
all of which are by Jose Saramago
