The Hollywood Theatre at PDX Airport is a microcinema located on one of the concourses of Portland International Airport. It was designed and ran by The Hollywood Theatre, an independent theatre located in a historic building in Portland's Hollywood District.

The idea is innovative, but also obvious. The Hollywood Theatre is a microcinema, about the size of any other restaurant or store at an airport, that has seats for about two dozen viewers, and a small movie screen (138 inch diagonal, so still larger than a large screen television). The theater shows a variety of movies, from 3 to 10 minutes long. The movies are either by "Pacific Northwest artists" or "feature issues related to Oregon or the Pacific Northwest]". They include documentaries, music videos, or short narrative stories. The movies are appropriate for all ages, and given the stressful nature of air travel, are usually relaxing and non-confrontational. All of the movies together last about an hour, and they then loop around. There is no cost of admission, and viewers can come and go at any time.

I don't know of any other airport that has a microcinema like this. To me, the idea is pretty obvious, though: people in airports often need some type of entertainment, and a drop-in movie theater where people can tune out the stress of an airport for a few minute, and think about something other than lines and checks. The films last for about an hour, which is about the amount of time someone would usually be waiting before boarding. Despite being small and directly adjacent to the concourse, after entering the theater, it really does feel like a restful place set aside from the world---at least for a few minutes. So if you are at PDX, on Concourse C (right next to the Alaska Airlines gates, it is probably a good place to stop by for a few minutes. Just don't fall asleep in the dark room and miss your flight!
