Keys to locks long forgotten somewhere

The key ring hung on a hook by the pantry 

a simple metal circle that held 10, maybe 12 keys 

What are they for?  I wondered aloud, more than once

she just smiled, and tapped my arm as she walked by 

now she's gone  and 

they changed the lock to the front door

so I'll never know
