One Million, Forty-Eight Thousand, Five Hundred Seventy-Six. As I pointed out to my
computer teacher several years ago (much to his
annoyance), this is the number of
bytes in one
megabyte. For
simplicity, we tend to say that a megabyte (or
meg, or
MB) is one
million bytes, however, the
binary number system of
computers doesn't use the "nice, round numbers" that our familliar
base-ten number system uses.
1,048,576 is equal to 2^20. The
square root of 1,048,576 is 1,024, which is the number of bytes in a
kilobyte.
