• The Great Northern War:

• Swedish king Charles XII (currently living in the Bessarabian town of Bendery) has convinced Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III to declare war on Russia.  Ahmed defeats the Russians at the Battle of the Pruth and is given Azov (Russia's only outlet to the Black Sea in the resulting treaty.  According to legend, Tsar Peter the Great's army is helpless but Peter's Mistress Ekaterina secures their release from the Sultan.
