A hack by Intel used in the Xeon to allow systems to break the 4Gb memory barrier (yeah, some folks need more space than that) by tagging on 4 bits to the address bus. Intel didn't want to go to 64 bit addressing because they knew it would compete against their upcoming IA-64 architecture, which they want to restrict only to high-end servers.
