Back in the dark ages, most computers needed these beasts to perform the simple task of displaying more than 80 characters on one line. Examples of computers that needed these cards are the Apple II and the Atari 400/800. the Apple //e was a strange one; it needed an 80 column card even though the hardware to do 80 columns was built right into the motherboard. Apple has scams of its own, it's not at all innocent };)
