Sometimes referred to as the "
Rand book," this book was published in 1955 by the
Rand Corporation, and is nothing more than one million
random digits (and a table of random
deviates). Typical use would involve defining an
algorithm for going from one number to another page (
e.g., taking a number, read the first three digits, jump to that page, use the next three digits to determine where on the new page to begin). Open the book to a
pseudorandom page, and
blindly place your finger on the page. Reading from there, select a new page, and use the number found there.
This two stage selection is to increase randomness; a human will usually flip open a book about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through; will more often select a right side page to a left side page, and will usually point above and to the right of center.
