The version of C standardized by the American National Standards Institution (ANSI) in 1989. This version is considered to be a baseline that all "C" compilers should be able to adhere to.

ANSI C was defined, in part, by the need for a C framework that developers could rely on, instead of developing for one specific dialect of C.

Also known as "C89."
