Comic opera by Benjamin Britten, based on a less comic story by Guy de Maupassant, Le rosier de Madame Husson. The eponymous protagonist shakes off his mother's apron strings after inadvertently getting drunk following his selection as King of the May (this would normally have been a Queen of the May but he was deemed more virtuous than all the local girls).

Libretto by Eric Crozier, first performance at Glyndebourne, 1947.
