Αλκινοη
A Corinthian woman, married to Polybus, son of Dryas. She incurred the wrath of Athena for the following reason: she had hired a woman to spin for her and when the work was completed refused to pay the agreed sum. The woman uttered curses, calling Athena to witness the dishonesty of Alcinoe. Athena was the patroness and protector of women who spun, and she struck Alcinoe with madness. Immediately the young woman fell in love with a guest, a stranger from Samos, called Xanthus. In pursuit of him she abandoned her husband and children, but in mid journey she came to her senses and in despair, calling on her children and husband, she cast herself into the sea.
