hymn, frequently wrongly attributed to
St Ignatius Loyola (
1491-
1556), but in fact dating from as early as
1334, and possibly from 7th-century
Ireland, as it is one of a number of works bearing tha alternate title 'The Prayer of
St Patrick'.
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salve me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
in saecula saeculorum.

Soul of Christ, make me holy.
Body of Christ, cleanse me.
Blood of Christ, make me drunk.
Water from Christ's side, wash me.
Passion of Christ, comfort me.
O good Jesus, listen to me.
Among your wounds, shelter me.
Never let me be parted from you.
Protect me from the wicked enemy.
In the hour of death, call me.
And order me to come to you,
So that I may praise you with the saints
Through the age of ages.
