Arimaa (pronounced uh-REE-muh) is a board game designed by computer engineer Omar Syed in 2003; with the goal of creating a game that would be hard for computers to play well, but not too hard for humans to learn, thus giving humans a chance to beat even fairly advanced AIs. It is designed to be played with a standard chess set, although the pieces are traditionally played between gold and silver teams, and the pieces are named after animals.

The game is currently available for play at arimaa.com. Interest in the game has waned somewhat since 2015, when an AI finally beat the Arimaa challenge, a US$12,000 prize for the first AI to beat the top three human players. The prize was won by Sharp, a bot designed by a programmer named David Wu.
