Atlantikwall, also known as "
Atlantic Wall", is a series of
bunkers (yes, the "
wall" was not really a "
wall") built by the germans along the coasts of
France,
England,
Belgium,
Netherlands,
Germany,
Norway and
Denmark during
WWII to avoid a possible (inevitable?) allied invasion.
The "wall" is impressive in many aspects. It was heavily armed and had 3.5m of concrete walls that could withstand direct hits of allied weapons. The bunkers (aka "pillboxes") had 12-mile range 152mm guns and were usually located in hard to reach places. They also had a rail system to carry ammunitions, thus speeding up the reloading process considerably.
It is said three Hoover Dams could be built with the amount of concrete spent on the 14.000 bunkers of the "wall".
