Eastern arm of the Indian Ocean, bordering Sri Lanka and India on the west, Bangladesh on the north, and Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand on the east. It is 2,090km long and 1,610km wide. Rivers that flow into the bay include the Ayeyarwady, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Kristna, and Kaveri. Sediment from the rivers has made the sea very shallow, and also formed fertile, heavily populated deltas. Severe monsoons and cyclones on the northern coast have done great damage and killed many inhabitants. Some of the main ports are Calcutta, Chittagong, and Sittwe.
