The Beefmaster breed originated in Texas in the early part of the twentieth century as a result of cross-breeding between Herefords, Shorthorns, and Brahmans.
Recognized as a distinct breed of cattle by 1954, Beefmaster is, according to one rancher, a "meat machine." It consistently earns praise for its fertility, disposition, hardiness, weights, conformation, and milk production capacity.
In the past decades, Beefmaster cattle have become very popular in Africa, where their ability to produce high yields of meat in inadequate conditions makes them well-suited to poorer ranches.
Incidentally, my family has a ranch in Hearne, Texas, and we recently acquired a Beefmaster bull.
