Beginner Books is a division of Random House that specializes in easy-reading children's books. It started in 1957 with Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. Dr. Seuss was the main editor at Beginner Books from its inception until his death in 1991.

These simple rules have brought great success for the entire Beginner Books line. But commerical and social success hasn't translated into critical acclaim. Although shortlisted many times, no Beginner Books book has ever won a Caldecott Award (for the best children's picture book of the year.)
