Bessie Head is an African writer. She was born in South Africa in 1937 of mixed parentage. Because she had a black father and a white mother, she was unable to find a place in the society of the time. She was in foster care until she was thirteen years old. Afterwards, she went to a mission school and trained as a teacher. She was exiled from her native country and eventually became a citizen of Botswana.
