Bosatsu is the Japanese translation of the Sanskrit 'bodhisattva', a representation of Buddha in any time period. Instead of entering Nirvana after achieving the highest state of enlightenment, a bosatsu/bodhisattva remains on Earth by their own will in order to help lead others to a more enlightened state.
