Italian composer; born ca. 1580 in
Pavia, Italy; died after 1618.
Caterina Assandra was a nun at the cloister of Saint Agata in Lomells in the Lombard region of northern Italy. She studied counterpoint with one of the leading teachers of the day, Benedetto Rè. Her fame as a composer and performer (organist) extended beyond Italy during the first half of the 17th century and some of her works were published during her life. Understandably, Caterina Assandra's compositions were limited to sacred works, in the motet style. She was one of a number of northern Italian composers during that time whose motets were for a few voices and an organ continuo in the new concertato style.
Among Assandra's published works are a Jubilate Deo and an Ave Verum Corpus.
