Cliometrics is the systematic and mathematical analysis of economic history. Its name probably has its roots in Clio, the Greek Muse of History, and the Greek metron, meaning measure. Cliometrics was born had a brief flash of popularity late in the 20th Century, but has suffered disdain from pure historians since its inception.

There exists The Cliometric Society, founded in 1983, which is committed to "...using economic theory and statistical techniques to study economic history. The Society seeks to advance and improve scholarship by emphasizing methodology, practicing, and promoting educational opportunities for young scholars."
