The site was designed to draw users away from Yahoo!, although Yahoo!'s offerings already include a web directory, an instant messenger client, a web mail system, and a personal directory.

At their peak, CollegeClub was sending one corporate whore in my dorm an enormous box filled with flyers, posters, and cards every week. At one point, the posters read "5,000 people at Carnegie Mellon University are using CollegeClub. Why aren't you?" (Carnegie Mellon has about 5,000 undergraduate students and about 1,000 graduate students, so it's possible that this number was inflated.) Furthermore, CMU already provides a web directory, an instant messenger client, a web mail system, and a personal directory.

CollegeClub went bankrupt in 2000, at which time it was purchased by equally aggressive marketer Student Advantage.
