The highest rank of a non-commissioned (NCO) officer in the United States Army. The military pay grade is E-9. CSMs usually have at LEAST 16 years of experience in the military, and have reached their rank through bravery/leadership qualities/exemplary work efficiency.

A CSM is a senior enlisted trainer and spokesperson for the Army. He has many important duties, such as monitoring the training of new recruits, counseling the Commander, overseeing the work of his subordinate NCOs, ensuring adherence to command policies and inspection of command activies and facilities.

It is expected of a Command Sergeant Major to act with utmost responsibility and sense of duty. He leads, after all, a large number of servicemembers.
