chef of the fighting 256th
squadron, despite the fact that he poisoned the squadron by mashing hundreds of cakes of
GI soap into the sweet potatoes. In the words of
Yossarian, he did this just to show that people have the taste of
Philistines.
The soldiers ate the concoction by the plateful and became quite ill. As a result, Snark was busted down to Private and was thus only a corporal on page 65 of the old Dell version of the novel.
