Devil's Island was a prison in French Guiana notorious for its harsh conditions. The prison conditions were horrible, and even the guards suffered greatly. Worse of all was the 'double jeopardy' of being sent here-- Even when released from prison, prisoners could not go home, they had to live with the heat, disease, and insects of French Guiana. Conditions were probably comparable to jail in Cambodia. See also: big house
