A noble
Italian family, the title created by
Charles V. The head of the
Genoese branch,
Andrea Doria, commanded the papal
fleet at the
Battle of Lepanto. Another member of the family became
Pope Innocent X.
The head of the family in the Second World War was Prince Filippo Andrea VI Doria Pamphilj, whose daughter Princess Orietta married Frank Pogson, a Briton, who adopted the noble surname. He died in 1998 and she in 2000. The present head of the family is Prince Jonathan, their son.
