Peru's largest daily newspaper, with a circulation of over 120,000. Diario El Comercio was founded in 1839, making it the oldest privately-owned newspaper in the country. The slogan "Independencia y Veracidad" ("Independence and Truthfulness") was adopted to reflect the newspaper's focus on objectivity and journalistic ethics, although the military took control of production during the 1970s. El Comercio is controlled by shareholders from the Miró Quesada family.

In November of 2000, the paper published several anti-Fujimori editorials after the preident's abrupt resignation.
