Epicenter is epi- (above) + center. It is the point on the surface of the Earth directly above the point of tectonic shock (or underground nuke test), which is usually where the most damage occurs. However, there are other points on the globe which feel the effects of seismic waves which bounce around in the earth's crust as well. (perhaps a geophysicist could offer a better explanation)
