Euripedes was the first to refer to the Erinyes in a group of three in his play Orestes. The names of each fury, loosley translated mean:

Alecto "She who does not rest"
Megaera "The envious one"
Tisiphone "The avenger of murder"

Ancient Greek vases will often depict the furies as dog-headed and bat winged.
