Gérard Depardieu is probably one of the world's most famous and respected actors ever. While not enjoying as much fame in America as Europe or Canada, he has nevertheless had a great presence in many American films. Many of you have seen his work, some of you may have seen him and not even realized it was him. A complete Filmography is listed below for your reference. He has been known as "The Robin Williams of France" and "French De Niro". He has a hefty list of films, comparable that of the veteran British actor Christopher Lee. His most notable performances in North America (of which he has a leading role) include the well recieved My Father the Hero where he plays an overprotective father, and the award winning Greencard. While his movies range from Drama to Suspense to Action to Comedy, (and he is equally talented in all fields) I particularly enjoy his comedies just because he's got a very animated face that can sometimes look very funny. I suggest anyone who hasn't seen his movies should try one. He's a brilliant French actor, but his appeal isn't limited to the French people alone. I'm not French and I can barely speak it, but I still enjoy his films, both English and subtitled French.
Depardieu was born in 1948, the third child of six. Amazingly, Depardieu as a child, was a juvenile delinquent who dropped out of school when he was only 12 years old. He ran away from home and lived on the streets. It seemed hopeless for him. It wasn't until he was spotted as a potential actor at the Theatre Nationale Populaire, that he actually stopped being a vagabond and began his career.
