With an area of 11,031
square miles (28,570 square km), the Great
Slave Lake is the fifth largest lake in
North America. It is located in the
Northwest Territories,
Canada, near the
Alberta border. It is ice-free only four months out of the year.
The Great Slave Lake and the Lesser Slave Lake are named for the Slave Indians, a tribe of Indians indigenous to the region, and not for what you might think of when you hear the word 'slave.'
