An acronym: Horizontal TakeOff and Landing
Nearly all aeroplanes are HTOL vehicles. Helicopters are VTVL however, and the Space Shuttle takes off vertically and lands horizontall VTHL.
Designs for HTOL space vehicles exist but have never been constructed e.g. HOTOL.
