The name of a valley and a dam just north of Yosemite in the California Sierra Nevada.
Because of the beauty of the valley, the important early environmentalist, John Muir, fought to prevent the dam from being built. He appealed to President Theodore Roosevelt to create Yosemite National Park as a means of accomplishing this. Roosevelt had the park created, but allowed the dam to be built anyway.
