Internetspeak, like newspeak, is an offshoot of the English language attached to our generation's use of instant messaging (or "iming") and online chatting designed to shorten word length and cut down on typing. Internetspeak makes common use of numbers, acronyms, and symbols to replace common words or sounds. In such words grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are cast asunder in the interest of creating quicker and more efficient conversation. Some examples are: lol (laugh out loud), gr8 (great), ^_^ (cute anime smilie), and :) (happy face).
