Mika is Lain's "sister", a teenage girl who, with the rest of the "Iwakura family", was selected to provide Lain with a family until she had discovered who se really was. She finds her "sister" strange and she is distant from the rest of the family, often spending time with her boyfriend, and even with him she seems cold and distant.
Spoiler Alert!
Though she has nothing really to do with Lain's nature, she becomes a target of the Knights of Eastern Calculus, who use the KIDs technology to trap her soul in the Wired and she remains as a broken shell that isn't really human anymore.
