One of the world's foremost choreographers. Jiří Kylián was born in Prague in 1947, and entered their ballet school in 1956, but is principally associated with the Nederlands Dans Theater, which he joined as an associate choreographer in 1973. Kylián was artistic director of the NDT from 1978 to 1999. He has created more than fifty choreographies for them.

On top of the main dance troupe, known as NDT I, he has also founded the experimental NDT II for young dancers and NDT III for older dancers. Some of his works combine use of all of them (Arcimboldo, 1995).
