**Dam**-en" Joan is a male.

Born in 1965 in the Belgian village of Achel. He received a degree in Electro-Mechanical Civil Engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1988, and won his Ph.D. in Cryptography in 1995. He does a lot of work with block ciphers, stream ciphers and hash functions.

Daemen has worked for Johnson and Johnson, Bacob (a Belgian bank), and Banksys (operator of most Belgian ATMs). As of this writing, he works for Proton World International, a technology provider dealing with smart cards and security issues.

Daemen is probably most famous for his work with Vincent Rijmen, a man he met while doing his doctoral research with a group called COSIC. Together, they created Rijndael ("rain-doll"), a cryptographic algorithm that has been chosen by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as the Advanced Encryption System, set to replace DES as the form of encryption used by the US government (and probably a host of other groups as well) in the summer of 2001.

Daemen and Rijmen chose the name "Rijndael" as an amalgamation of their last names, which they were tired of hearing mispronounced by careless English speakers. As long as you don't call it "Region Dale," they're happy. Other names they considered (from Dutch): "Herfstvrucht," "Angstschreeuw" and "Koeieuier." Let it never be said that math people don't have a sense of humor.
