Born Vincent Leaphart in 1931, he was a founder of the new religious movement entitled MOVE. He established the group as a way of practicing natural law and believed the name Africa was significant because he saw it as the "continent where all life began." Subsequent followers all adopted the surname Africa as well.

John Africa was killed in 1985, in an explosive fire started by Philadelphia city police.
